Protecting your business needs far more than Anti-Virus

Most businesses believe they have sufficient IT Security by simply installing an Anti-Virus software (in most cases a free version) on their servers & computers, however this couldn’t be further from the truth.

A layered approach to IT Security

To achieve resiliency, we have designed a layered approach to IT security. This layered approach covers 4 key areas. Education, Next-Generation Firewall security, Anti-Virus and Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery (BCDR). Below is a summary of each area.

Education

The most frequent, common, and often most detrimental cause of security issues that can disrupt an organisation is unintentional human actions. To combat this, we run group workshops for users on how to identify threats in deceptive emails and other malicious methods. These classes reduce a large amount of risk to the organisation.

Firewall

Like a house your organisation needs perimeter security. A Next-Generation Firewall is like a front gate to your business that only allows the right traffic from the internet through to your network.  We typically install one of these appliances in your network to act as your security gateway to the world.

Anti-Virus

If a firewall is like a front gate then Anti-Virus is like the bug spray. Sometimes threats can still access the inside of your organisation e.g. by someone plugging in a USB drive to a computer. Anti-Virus is there to help eliminate this type of real-time threat. Simple Biz uses a centrally managed award-winning Anti-Virus software that is monitored 24/7 by our Total Care IT support team.

Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery

In some cases threats can make it past the firewall and aren’t quarantined by Anti-Virus because they are what we call a Zero-day or New threat. When all else fails it’s important to have a Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery solution in place. In short terms this is a backup solution that can have your business up and running in minutes rather than days by restoring a recent backup from your local BCDR device or securely from an encrypted offsite copy in the cloud. "I don't even know what happened, I just know that it started working pretty much overnight. ... If I had to turn back the clock I would say that: just get a good, secure platform to begin with so then you don't have to deal with curveballs."  - Andrew - Ray White Southbank

IT Security Workshops

The security threat landscape has broadened over the last few years at a rate greater than before. Hackers have now taken these malicious attacks to the next level by creating behavioural based targeted attacks. These attacks can be in many different forms but the most common is the impersonation of a senior level executive requesting a member of the finance team to urgently transfer funds to an offshore bank account. More often than not that senior level executive’s email account has been compromised by an earlier phishing attack that they weren’t aware of.

Our workshops generally go for 30-60 minutes and in these workshops, we cover several different IT security scenarios by showcasing real life examples. We then show ways to identify these threats and the best practices to avoid them.

Next Generation Firewall

It’s not uncommon for a business to use a consumer grade modem router for their organisation. Due to the insufficient security of these devices hackers can generally gain easy access to corporate networks via the internet.

A Next-Gen Firewall appliance such as WatchGuard™ can significantly reduce threats into your organisation by offering Enterprise Grade Unified Threat Management which blocks threats at the front door of your organisation. Along with blocking threats a Next-Gen Firewall can also provide Data Loss Prevention (DLP) which can scan text and files to detect sensitive information attempting to exit your network

Managed Anti-Virus

There are many different forms of Anti-Virus, some are free, and others are very well marketed but ultimately they very rarely provide any real form of protection to your organisation. Most of these types of Anti-Virus are very glossy on the front end and constantly pop up with unnecessary alerts about how they are protecting your system. These applications generally affect performance of your computers as they tend to use unnecessary resources.

Endpoint managed Anti-Virus gives you enterprise protection against real-time threats without the excessive use of computer resources, keeping your computer protected without impacting the overall performance.

Simple Biz monitors and manages your Anti-Virus 24/7 by our IT support team and is included in all of our Total Care Managed IT support plans.
